  1. ED

The router is fast and stable. The configuration is very good.

  2. Garet Hofer

Alright, folks, buckle up for a tale of love, tech, and triumph. My girlfriend, bless her heart, was clinging to a router so old it probably voted in the 2016 election. This relic, a “perfectly fine” budget box from five years ago, was chugging along in her cozy little apartment like a wheezing grandparent running a marathon. She swore it was “plenty fast” for her Netflix binges and TikTok scrolls. And, to be fair, she wasn’t entirely wrong—until you stepped into her bedroom. That room was a Wi-Fi black hole, where dreams of streaming went to die, and her phone’s 5G became the unsung hero.
Enter me, the knight in shining armor, armed with the Ubiquiti UniFi Dream Router (UDR)—a surprise gift that’s now the MVP of her apartment and possibly our relationship. Spoiler alert: this thing is gold, and I’m here to tell you why, with a sprinkle of humor to keep it spicy.
Setup: Easier Than Convincing Her to Upgrade
First off, setting up the Dream Router was a breeze, which is good because I didn’t have the patience for a tech support saga. The UniFi app uses Bluetooth to pair, making it feel like I was connecting AirPods, not a router. Plug it into her ISP’s modem, download the app, and boom—Wi-Fi nirvana in under 10 minutes. Even my girlfriend, who thinks “firmware” is a type of yoga, could’ve done it. The app’s dashboard is slick, showing ISP status, connected devices, and Wi-Fi quality like a proud parent displaying report cards.
Performance: Bedroom Wi-Fi That Doesn’t Ghost You
The old router? It treated her bedroom like it was Narnia—signal went in, never came out. The Dream Router, with its Wi-Fi 6 dual-band goodness, laughs in the face of walls. We’re talking near-identical download speeds across her 1200-square-foot apartment, whether she’s in the living room or tucked in bed. One Amazon reviewer nailed it: “The signal is chef’s kiss amazing.” I ran a speed test, and even in the bedroom, we hit close to her 300Mbps plan’s max. No more buffering during her late-night “Real Housewives” marathons.
This router’s got a 4×4 Wi-Fi 5 radio for 2.4GHz (600Mbps) and a 2×2 Wi-Fi 6 radio for 5GHz (up to 2.4Gbps at 160MHz), which is tech-speak for “it’s fast as hell.” It handles over 300 clients without breaking a sweat, so her smart bulbs, Alexa, and that one random IoT toothbrush she impulse-bought are all living their best lives.
Features: More Bells and Whistles Than She’ll Ever Need
This is where the Dream Router flexes like a bodybuilder at a vegan convention. It’s got features my girlfriend will never use, but I’m geeking out over them. The UniFi OS is a control freak’s dream, letting you set up VLANs to isolate her IoT gadgets (because that toothbrush doesn’t need to chat with her laptop), manage traffic, and even block ads. Want to add security cameras or VoIP phones? The “Protect” and “Talk” apps have you covered. It’s like giving her a Ferrari when she just needs a bicycle.
The real game-changer? ISP issue notifications. No more playing the “is it me or is it them?” cat-and-mouse game with her provider. The router snitches on the ISP when it’s acting up, so she knows who to yell at. Plus, it’s got PoE ports for powering access points, 128GB of storage for surveillance footage, and support for up to 15 mesh nodes if her apartment suddenly becomes a mansion. Overkill? Maybe. Awesome? Absolutely.
The Catch: It’s Not Perfect (But Close)
Okay, let’s keep it real. The Dream Router isn’t flawless. Its 1Gbps ports cap out at about 700Mbps for internet speeds, so if you’ve got a gigabit plan, you’re not hitting the full potential wirelessly. Wired connections get closer, but still not 1:1. Also, the hardware does routing in software, and some folks on Reddit griped about the CPU being a bit underpowered for gigabit speeds, which can slow things down if you’re running heavy features like threat detection. For her 300Mbps plan, though? It’s like using a flamethrower to light a candle—more than enough.
Oh, and it’s $199, which isn’t chump change compared to her old $30 router. But when you consider it’s enterprise-grade gear dressed up for home use, it’s a steal.
The Girlfriend Verdict: “Okay, You Win”
When I surprised her with the Dream Router, she rolled her eyes, muttering, “My old router was fine.” Fast-forward a week, and she’s bragging to her friends about “this fancy router that makes the internet work everywhere.” The bedroom Wi-Fi now delivers, and she’s stopped side-eyeing me when her Zoom calls drop. She even loves the sleek white design, which blends into her decor better than the old router’s “blinking Christmas tree” vibe.
Final Thoughts: A Wi-Fi Love Story
The Ubiquiti UniFi Dream Router is the hero her apartment needed, turning Wi-Fi dead zones into distant memories and giving me bragging rights as the “tech genius” boyfriend. It’s overkill for her needs, sure, but it’s like buying a sports car for grocery runs—why not flex a little? The ISP notifications, robust features, and bedroom-busting signal make it a winner. If your partner’s stuck in the Stone Age with a router older than their Netflix account, surprise them with this. Just don’t expect them to admit you were right… at least not right away.
Rating: 4.5/5 (Docked half a point for the gigabit speed cap, but it’s still a dream come true.)

  3. Zeego

Very poor wireless performance. Even in the same room with line of sight on 5Ghz and 80mhz channels I was getting slower speeds than my 5 year old Asus AX82U that was half the cost.

  4. Kenmogne Ngazing Cabrel

    Satisfais

  5. Skyman

A very good product, take some time to learn for configuration. But mostly can find the answers on the internet. Shop service in also good, fast delivery and the stock arrived safe and on time.

  6. Cpend

This does more than I expected! The security controls and parental locks are amazing!

  7. Karl

Could not recommend this product enough. For any one that has 1 gig internet this is the product to get. I have 2 gig internet and this product pushes every bit of that back to me from my provider. I get 900 mbps on wo fi 6e on my phone and it is easy to set up and hook up to APS as well as there switches. This is a great firewall that is easy to use for anyone.

  8. LAW76

I was HACKED. I had a MITM attack and had several DDOS ATTACKS. I had Huge packet loss, and my internet kept going out. I kept changing my passwords and couldn’t logon. I even bought their extra security and was hacked to the point where I could NOT use this device. My internet wasn’t accessible 5 times in 48 hours. I also had a lot of high latency,. I do not recommend. I’m very disappointed. I should have stayed with my eero routers. I had no problems until I used this device. I’m very upset.

  9. Jianyu Chen

I had the Asus Zenwifi ET12, the firmware was disappointing, and the failover/load-balancing bugs pushed me over the edge to find a better system.

I had never considered the dream router until I test run it at my friend’s house, and I am instantly hooked: the firmware and capabilities are miles ahead of Asus, and it is truly capable of fine-tuning every aspect of my network so my media consumption devices don’t compete with my work servers, and isolating my IoT devices while keeping my Homekit running smoothly.
